Due to limited portable water resources, growing populations, urban changes in rural areas and excessive use of marine resources for salt extraction, the quality of water available to people has significantly deteriorated. For these reasons, an intelligent monitoring system is essential to continuously monitor the quality of the water.
Water Monitoring is included in the more general environmental monitoring and involves the observation and analysis of data samples about chemical conditions (dissolved oxygen, nutrients, metals, oils, pesticides, sediments), physical conditions (temperature, flow, sediments, erosion potential of stream banks and lake shores), biological conditions (abundance and variety of aquatic plant and animal life) in our seas, our rivers, on the surface and in ports.

Water monitoring can be conducted:

Water monitoring through IoT technologies

Water monitoring systems are commonly composed of: sensors, data acquisition systems (data logger), data transfer systems, data management systems and data analysis.
The analysis of collected data can provide essential information for the correct interpretation of those phenomena that cause changes in water quality thus being able to identify specific existing problems, give timely warning in recognition of threats or hazards and set up specific pollution prevention programs.

IoT technology is ideal for this type of applications, where large volumes of digital data must be managed and it possible to access, collect, and analyze data real time and remotely, i.e., without being present on site to perform field inspections with human workers in the loop.

Data obtained by remotely monitoring system sets the foundation towards effective predictive maintenance approaches.
